Pole

“This fundamental shift in perception and the quiet revolution of female empowerment is explored in the artwork … Pole.”

Pole

The connotations of pole dancing no longer hold weight within contemporary society.

The inherited connotations of sleaze and sexual exploitation are being challenged by a paradigmatic shift in opinion.

A revolution has happened.

Feminism has reclaimed the pole as an artform, a performance piece, a thing of beauty and fitness equipment. It has been assimilated as symbol of female empowerment. It is no longer the sole preserve of the male voyeur. A re-defining of male control and dominance has been implemented.

The tenderness of the montages celebrates the beauty of the re-appropriated act of pole dancing and the reclamation of this symbol of masculine dominance.

The high key images are diametrically opposed to the dark and dingy imagined perceptions of this symbolism. Voyeuristic titillation is no longer present and instead is replaced by a sense of contemplation of the female form through the art of dance and movement.
