Wuhan, China - Part 2

A sprawling metropolis and home to eleven million residents. ….

Wuhan … a nondescript and wholly unremarkable Second Tier Chinese Mega City located in the heart of China. A sprawling metropolis and home to eleven million residents. A city whose only defining note of merit is it location for Mao Zedong’s (Chairman Mao) chosen place to take a swim in the Yangtze River at the age of seventy two.

It sat in relative socio-geographical anonymity behind the Red Curtain and shielded from the West, until late 2019 and early 2020, when a cluster of novel coronavirus cases were identified in the city and it was catapulted into the global spotlight.

Nic Gaunt was gifted a unique opportunity and unprecedented access to document the city and its inhabitants.

This project offers a rare glimpse into the everyday life of this now infamous city.

The work will hopefully dispel some of the stigma now surrounding its people and their culture.
